Park City/Canyons/Deer Valley ski Trip 2010
The plane left JFK at 6:35 AM, touched down in Salt Lake City at 10:45 AM
We were checking into the hotel by noon.  Some of us then went to Park City
for lunch, some went to rent their skis, and some may have even taken a nap
to refresh from the early morning, but we were all ready to ski the next 6 days.
We had our orientation meeting with Maxine, where all our fears were put to rest,
as we heard that the brass fittings in all the bathrooms at Deer Valley were still
there.
Sunday the sun was up, a few clouds and the temperature around 35 degrees.
As we could ski any of the 3 mountains on any given day, a few made their way
to Deer Valley, and the rest were on the 8:41 shuttle to Park City.  What an
absolutely amazing day at the mountain.  The snow was great, NO ICE!!!
We almost didn't know what to do without the annoying sound of edges scrapping
on ice.  We had been told that even though this year the 3 mountains may not have
gotten as much snow as in the past, but the quality of snow was 'Brilliant', as
Maxine, from The Peaks Hotel, told us and it was.  Park City was just great,
and later in the day we found that Deer Valley was just as good.  We had lunch on the deck
of the Mid Mountain Lodge, and had to replenish the sun screen before we left for our
mountain tour.  A few clouds rolled in, but they actually helped, as the snow held up
all day, without turning into slush.  We finished up the day at the Legacy Bar for a few
amber colored cocktails and then back to the hotel for the hot tub and some cookies
from 'The Cookie Man'.
Monday we had the same ' terrible' weather as we had on Sunday, so we managed to
trudge ourselves out to The Canyons, where Maxine had been nice enough to offer us
our own mountain tour. The Canyons was amazing!!  Great snow, the mountain was so
big, we didn't even think we would get to cover it all in one day, so we were really looking
forward to coming back the next day.  As the day ended we saw thick clouds coming over
the mountain, and we actually saw a few flakes fall.  We were outside of Doc's by days end,
all taking about the great conditions, and what a great mountain it was.  Tuesday we couldn't
wait to get to The Canyons, as almost 7 inches of fresh soft snow had fallen over night,
and the mountain didn't disappoint us.  The snow turned the mountain into an amazing place to ski.
Every trail we found had great conditions, we were ankle deep in snow on some trails, just gliding down.
A few brave soles found their way up to the top of 99-90, and better still, found there way down.
After a tough day of skiing at The Canyons, Wednesday became an off day for many, but still
others got lift tickets and continued to ski in great conditions.  For the off day, it was mixed between
a day trip to Salt Lake City, Golfing outside of SLC, shopping in Park City, spaing (messaging) just outside
of Park City, or just relaxing by the hot tub and pool.
Deer Valley was next for most of us, and Joel Malek and Pete Wolf had some friends out there who
met us at the mountain, and gave us our own little tour.  No fresh snow at Deer Valley but the mountain
had some great views, great snow, and of course the Brass fittngs in the bath rooms.
Thursday night we had our group dinner and drinks at the hotel, and afterward we were forced to finish
off the left over alcohol in Gerard and Darlene's room.  Thank goodness the Jagermeister was only there
for medicinal purposes, the same holds true for the Petron.
Our Club races were set for Friday at Park City, and the natural snow was falling.  The weather that
day was all mixed up, it snowed, the sun came out, fog came in, it snowed again, and the sun came
out again.  Needless to say, some of the Club races became very competitive, in the usual friendly manor.
Jim and Mike had a great race, as did Gerard and Darlene.  Our newest member, Al Chanin, happened
to go through the last gate backwards, and needed to get off the track through a side exit, but he still
managed to have a lot of fun.  Joel Malek decided to take the shortest distance between 2 points, and
split the poles from the beginning.  He thought it was a little strange that he was in deep snow instead of
the tracks that were laid out around each pole, but he came back with a strong effort for his next run.
The strong rumor that had started was that Jim had been chicked by Gerrie Heitman, but it was only a
rumor, as Jim beat her by less than .05 of a second.  He was really getting worried if the age factor for
him was going to start taking it's toll.
We were all up early Saturday morning as the bus was picking us up at 6 am, and except for the Hotel mix up of
taking another ski groups baggage onto our bus, we were ALL at the airport in plenty of time to board the plane.
Well at least that was what we thought until we landed and realized that Neil and Barbara O'Keefe were not
at JFK to pick up their luggage.  They somehow managed to miss our flight, but their luggage arrived, so
it was one of the few times that luggage had to wait for people to leave the airport, but they were on the
next flight, and everything worked out.
Another great weeklong trip in the books.
